The professionals of the Méribel Guide Office offer a very original day to learn about the snowpack, avalanche mechanisms and avalanche rescue techniques.
You like to ski off-piste and more generally the mountain in winter, or you are just curious to know better this environment. This day with a mountain professional is for you.
The objectives of this day:
A mountain guide will take you to the Méribel valley to explain the formation of the snowpack, the rules of safety and behavior in the face of an avalanche and the use of equipment.
You will participate in a scenario with research exercises, a volunteer, avalanche.
The word of the guide:
I will give you the basic advice to develop your sense of observation, give you a better knowledge of the mountain environment, the snowpack and the basic mechanisms of avalanches to evolve with maximum safety in the mountains.
To show you the use of the safety pack, essential for anyone who moves off slopes, which includes a DVA (Avalanche Victim Detector), a shovel and a probe.
My objective is to allow you to evolve in the mountains with maximum security.
Useful information :
Activity proposed on reservation, every Wednesday during the winter season.
Daily activity from 9h to 16h
Meeting at 9:00 in front of the Saulire Express gondola Chaudanne district
Equipment to be planed : your usual ski equipment, a backpack, a picnic (there is bad weather, possibility of having lunch at the restaurant)
Material provided by the Bureau des guides (DVA-shovel-probe). If you have your equipment you can use it.
Public: adults and children from 13 years

– Morning :
• We take skis and go directly on off pist, close to the slopes on
Meribel ski area.
• Cut of snow layers, explanations about avalanche mechanism and
fragile layers (famous « sugar snow »).
• Shovel test for fragile layer detection.
• Utilisation of security pack (transceiver-shovel-probe)
– Lunch : picnic or restaurant depending of weather.
– Afternoon :
• How to react facing avalanche, and research strategy.
• Research exercices and real situation.
The price includes : Safety equipment : shovel, probe, tranceiver
It does not include: lunch, ski pass, ski equipment.
