The first question you might ask yourself (and rightly so) is: why 1786 ?
To answer that question, we have to go back to 1786. For many years, the ascent of Mont Blanc had been the subject of numerous failed attempts by various experienced mountaineers, using the same routes.
On 7 August 1786, in the silence of the Great White, two Chamonixers, Jacques Balmat and Michel Paccard, took a new route. They ventured onto a route that had never been attempted or explored before… By embarking on this route, unknown to most other mountaineers, their strategy paid off. These two Savoyard pioneers, familiar with the mountains and their native land, made the first ascent of Mont Blanc on 8 August 1786, reaching a height of 4,810 metres!
