Rafting is a unique experience. You feel every movement of the river, as if you were sitting directly on the water. It’s a thrilling sensation. – Emma Miton from Évolution 2

Sometimes placid, sometimes raging, the river remains a wild element which we can never take for granted. Although I watch athletes tackle the rapids with admiration, my favourite water sport is pedal-boating. But, as Jean-Claude Van Damme once said: ‘In 20 or 30 years’ time, there won’t be any water left. And since I love water too, I decided not to waste any more time and set off to discover the local rivers on a big inflatable buoy (sorry, did you say rafting?).

Water-based activities in Méribel 🚣🏻

J – 1 : Mountain activities in summer: how to prepare for a rafting session?

Tomorrow, I’m going rafting in the Savoie ! 💪🏽

Évolution 2 sent me an e-mail with all the information I needed: meet me at the base camp at Landry, on the banks of the Isère. I’ll be taking a group of 8 down one of the most beautiful rafting courses in France, a 2h15 adventure through impressive gorges and exhilarating rapids.

The only instructions? Bring a swimming costume, a towel and a smile!

Rafting near Moutiers: a warm welcome at the Landry base

On the big day, Hugo, the photographer, and I made our way to the base at Landry. We were instantly put at ease by the warm welcome. With its bar-restaurant and terraces, it’s a very friendly place, ideal for relaxing and enjoying the summer atmosphere in a green setting. The centre offers other activities such as hydrospeed, cycling, scootering, paintball, stand-up paddle and multi-activity challenges.

What equipment is needed for rafting?

At 2pm, I join my adventure partners and our very friendly instructor, Mario, for the hand-out of our equipment.

🔥 The result: it’s glorious weather, but what do we do, we wrap ourselves head to toe in neoprene, with helmets on our heads.

In fact, this equipment – overalls, neoprene waistcoat and booties, lifejacket, helmet and paddle – is essential and forms part of the personal protective equipment that guarantees our safety. And after a quick shower to freshen up, it’s easy to get used to 😎 !

How does a rafting session go?

We merrily make our way to our 9-person boat, where Mario carefully checks the equipment of each participant. He then gives us a detailed technical briefing, with all the essential information: paddling techniques, safety positions and appropriate reactions to the different situations we might encounter on the river.

Once the briefing is over, we choose our seats and take the raft down to the river. Today, the current is strong and the flow of water will be powerful. The river may be wild, but we’re in good hands.

Rafting down the Isère: it’s all about teamwork and trust

That’s it, we’re off! We won’t be alone on the river: several rafts are leaving simultaneously, ensuring that the guides can keep an eye on each other and help each other out if need be. Mario places the boat on the river, and then we make ourselves comfortable. We, the crew sit on the edge of the raft, in pairs, one behind the other. The instructor is at the back of the boat, directing and leading the descent.

Mario tests us before things get too hot… The orders are simple: ‘forward’ to paddle forward, ‘backward’ for the opposite direction, ‘stop’ to stop everything, and the favourite, ‘BANZAÏ!’, for everyone to sit down in the boat in a safe position. We were complete strangers 10 minutes ago, but we’re now moving forward in rhythm, with the impression of being a tightly-knit team of jolly fellows, ready for a great adventure.

Everything is taking place under our feet. You feel like you’re on cloud nine. You can feel the movement of the water, a sensation that’s both pleasurable and astonishing. When the boat hits a wave, the water rises up in front of us, creating an impressive spectacle. I can’t help but burst out laughing at the expressions of amazement on the faces of the two burly lads in the front row, who are being showered by the splashing water 🌊 .

Passionate about his job, Mario cheerfully leads the activity, sharing interesting anecdotes about the river and the flora and fauna of the Isère. Between paddle strokes, we enjoy the breathtaking scenery of mountains and forests. The river brings us together and reminds us of the beauty and power of nature.

Finally, we get to the nitty-gritty of the river. The instructor names the rapids and waves we’re about to face: ‘the ham slicer’, ‘ the mouth of the Isa’, ‘the 400 metres’, ‘the sheep’, ‘the dining room’ and ‘the dessert’. This is where the fun really starts 🥵.

Going through the rapids makes you feel alive and free. It’s a real adrenalin rush. We’re bouncing all over the place, and it has to be said that we’re not always in rhythm. But even if it means paddling into the void, we mustn’t stop.

Mario makes a few feints: “Oh, no, I think we’re heading for a rock here 😱.  ” So we row at full speed, all jumping into the middle of the boat in a safe position. It’s a mikado of legs and paddles in the air. We hit the rock between stress and laughter. The idea may seem far-fetched, but the guide knows what he’s doing: the boat bounces off the rock, and we end up in the right direction of the current. The effect is effective!

Halfway along the route, we cross the Canyon du Jovet. We admired the vertical cliffs and spotted majestic eagles’ nests. It’s the perfect opportunity to stop and try a jump of almost 5 metres for those who want to.

We then set off again to tackle the Centron rapids, where some impressive waves await us. This stage marks a more challenging end to this superb white-water descent..

End of the adventure ⚓

Arrival at Centron

The three rafters’ boats (😏) arrive at the end of the route, in Centron. We climb out of the boats, grinning from ear to ear. A shuttle bus picked us up to take us back to the base.

The adventure was fun and exciting, we feel like kids again. Rafting is a fantastic activity for creating unforgettable memories with loved ones. It’s the perfect opportunity to admire the beauty of the Savoyard landscape while regaining a sense of carefree joy.

I’m deeply grateful to Évolution 2 for giving me the opportunity to discover this sport. Rafting is an ice-breaker: you laugh out loud, you feel wonderfully ridiculous and you love it. It’s a superb collective experience, accessible to all, full of thrills, and I highly recommend it for a summer holiday in a mountain resort.

Interview with Emma Miton

Meet a young woman who is as passionate as she is enthusiastic.

A native of the region, Emma is a keen outdoor sportswoman. She started out as a kayak competitor, before obtaining a diploma to supervise rafting activities. Today, she’s marketing manager at Évolution 2’s Peisey-Vallandry centre.

What do you like about rafting?

Emma: I love the conviviality that this sport generates. It’s an ideal activity to share with family and friends. Everyone plays an active part in setting the pace for the boat: the more the group paddles together, the faster we go! You can let yourself be carried along and you’re always surprised by the water’s movements, which makes the experience a lot of fun. Above all, each descent is unique: the river is constantly changing, as is our experience of it.

Who can go rafting? Are there any particular prerequisites?

Emma: You need to be able to swim. We adapt the courses to suit the age, skill level and preferences of the participants. The length and intensity of the courses also vary according to the participants’ wishes and the time available during their stay. On the Doron de Bozel, children can start from the age of eight, while on the Isère, we have courses adapted from the age of six. We also welcome people with physical or mental disabilities. In collaboration with a local centre, we organise specific activities every fortnight for these people during their stay. This initiative is particularly important to us and we repeat it every year.

Emma Miton, Marketing and Communications Manager at Evolution 2

Rafting is often regarded as an extreme sport. How do you ensure the safety of rafters?

Emma: The safety of our participants is our absolute priority. Each boat is accompanied by an experienced, trained and state-certified guide, trained to a high level to handle any situation. What’s more, our trips are always made in groups, with several boats at the same time. This means that the guides can keep an eye on each other and help each other out if necessary. We offer a variety of routes for different age and physical aptitudes and we’re also on hand to advise you on the course best suited to your experience and preferences.

Why raft in Savoie?

Emma: Here, we’re lucky enough to be in a region where there’s still a lot of water and therefore good water levels. We have two beautiful Alpine rivers that offer different experiences: the Doron and the Isère. The Isère is regulated by the Montrigon dam, and above it the Tignes dam, which guarantees a constant flow for rafting. This means you can enjoy sporting outings at different levels of intensity, depending on your experience and preferences. What’s more, every two years Haute-Isère hosts the French canoe-kayak championships, including downhill slalom events. Proof, if needed of the quality of the white water possibilities of this river!

What advice would you give to people who want to try rafting?

Emma: Ask for advice. Talk to specialist organisations to find out what suits you best and your level. Don’t be afraid to talk about your fears so that you can be reassured and know what is and isn’t feasible. If an adult wants to take it easy, enjoy the scenery and go at their own pace, there’s no shame in choosing a rafting trip that’s recommended for children. We adapt the routes to suit you, so you can progress at your own pace… and in good spirits!

Marie Dohin leads a very busy life. Between her role as Communications Manager at Méribel Tourisme, her impressive performances as an ultra-trail athlete for Kiprun, and her responsibilities as a mother, she juggles the different facets of her life with dynamism.

What’s her secret? Find out in this article her tips for reconciling passion, work and family.

Trail in the Alps ⛰️

Marie Dohin’s evolution in the world of trail running :

Originally from Strasbourg, Marie started running in an urban environment. Although she discovered mountain running at a late stage, the summits are now her daily playground, allowing her to live her passion to the full.

Where does your love of trail running come from ?

Marie: Growing up, running was an integral part of my daily life because my dad was a marathon runner. I was lucky enough to travel with him on his races around the world. But when I met my husband, I was running in urban environments. So he said to me: “Marie, running is nothing if not in the great outdoors”. I went along with him and that’s how I discovered trail running on our outings in Normandy, where we lived at the time. Gradually, I got into the swing of things, seduced by the feeling of escape and disconnection that trail running provides.

From tarmac to the great outdoors

How did you become an athlete?

Marie : I became an athlete gradually, somewhat by chance. I’ve always been very sporty, but running was more of a hobby. As time went by and I took part in various competitions, I realised that I had a good level in this discipline. I like the competitive aspect of this sport, it challenges me: one has to face up to others, but also oneself and one’s limits. Little by little, I gained a certain status and was recruited by the Kiprun team, which is made up of 11 women and 6 men, all of very good level and from different backgrounds. This team creates a great collective dynamic within an individual discipline.

You’ve been racing for about ten years now. What still motivates you?

Marie : The key word is fun. When you do ultra trail, there are some very tough moments in the mountains, but thanks to your preparation, you give your body the ability to absorb and manage the difficulty as best it can. It’s so fascinating to see the body’s resilience and ability to evolve. And trail running is also a fabulous way to travel! My partner and I have walked and run in Peru, Cape Verde, Ecuador and Reunion Island. There are so many wonderful itineraries and landscapes to discover!

What are your next sporting challenges?

Marie : A lot of races appeal to me. This year I’ll be taking part in the UTMB TDS race, which is a great challenge. I’ve also got my sights set on the Diagonale des Fous in Réunion in the years to come. Beyond competition, I’m hoping to do the 3 valleys tour on a carefully mapped out route

Balancing motherhood and sporting performance

Photo : Sylvain Aimoz

Athlète and mother

Has motherhood changed your relationship with sport?

Marie: I was often told that motherhood would mean the end of top-level sport, that I wouldn’t be able to do everything. However, I’ve always been able to integrate many activities into my daily life, including sport, friends, work, love life… Then the children arrived, and they became a priority. With my habit of planning, this new organisation wasn’t so very difficult. As sport is a vital necessity for me, the time when I go to train is very precisely planned.  I have no problem going for an early morning run so as not to take up time with my children, or doing sport during my lunch break. This helps me maintain a healthy life balance.

Some athletes talk about ‘sacrifice’, which is not your case. You refer instead to, good time management.

Marie :  When my children were very young, I used to wonder whether it was selfish to go off and train in the mountains, because it meant spending less time with them. But what’s the point of being a frustrated parent who doesn’t fulfil his own wishes? Being a parent means sharing fabulous moments with your child on a daily basis, but it also means being a fulfilled adult! Here, I’m lucky because as soon as I leave the house, I find myself at the Lac du Tueda, from where I can access a variety of equally sumptuous itineraries: exploring the Parc National de la Vanoise, a tour of the Tougnète ridges, around the Aiguille du Fruit… It doesn’t require any complex logistics, which allows me to have time for myself and to be a good mum afterwards.

Mountain air : trail running in the Alps

About ten years ago, the athlete moved to Méribel in Savoie. A setting that has constantly fuelled her passion and her desire to explore new horizons.

Has living in Méribel, in the heart of the mountains, strengthened your passion?

Marie : Yes, indeed ! When I moved to Méribel, the term ‘trail’ took on a whole new meaning. The region offers a unique playground for running, very different from the urban or rural environment. When you don’t know an area like this, it’s a fabulous way to get to know it. What makes this sport so magical is the quest for what lies beyond what you can see. Here you discover a place, but you’re always drawn to what lies beyond a pass or a valley. What’s more, you never get tired of the landscape, because the seasons, the environment and the colours change dramatically, and it never ceases to delight and inspire.

Is this an advantage for your practice?

Marie : Absolutely raining at altitude, the difference in altitude and the routes we can take on a daily basis are real assets. Because it’s a fact: to perform well in the mountains, you have to run in the mountains. Of course, you can live in the city and be a very good trail runner by developing the qualities you need in other ways. But to optimise your mountain skills, it’s crucial to know the terrain you’ll be competing in and to understand the gradient ratios, the altitude, the particularities of the terrain… There’s no denying that living here makes things easier. However, there’s a heightened temptation to overdo things. You have to learn to moderate yourself.

Trail guide in Méribel 🏞️

Les évènements de trail à Méribel

Méribel offers a diverse range of races throughout the year. Running enthusiasts, let yourself be captivated by the Méribel Valley, an ideal playground for trail running.

What is your fondest sporting memory of Méribel?

Marie : I’d say the Méribel Trail in 2020, after the Covid period. It was the 50 km, a pretty fabulous course that took you all around the valley. It was just after my first daughter was born in January, so it was a real challenge for me! But I enjoyed myself throughout the race, because it was an opportunity to get back to the mountains, to see familiar faces again, and to get back into sport in a friendly atmosphere. This year, on 10 and 11 August, the Trail de Méribel will be celebrating its 10th anniversary. I’ll be there for the 35 km!

What are the trail events in Méribel?

Marie: In April, the Olympe Challenge takes place. It’s a beautiful popular event with a team of passionate volunteers. Then in August, as mentioned earlier, the Méribel Trail offers a variety of courses suitable for all levels. It’s an opportunity for everyone to discover the beauty of Méribel and escape into nature.

Flying is freedom. It’s a magical feeling that surpasses all words.” – Laurent, Tandem Top.

If you could have one magical power, what would it be? For me, without hesitation, it would be the ability to fly. To be close to the birds, to touch the clouds, to move to the rhythm of the wind, to float in the immensity of space…

Paragliding is the closest possible approximation to this feeling of freedom. To discover this sensation for myself, I had the opportunity to take a tandem flight with the professional paragliders in Méribel.

Paragliding in Méribel 🪂

30 minutes before takeoff…

This is it, the big day! I can't wait. Ski-suit on and snowboard in hand, I'm off to the summit of La Saulire at 1.30pm for a 2pm flight.

I meet Laurent, a Tandem Top pilot, and together we head for the paragliding hut. Here we meet all his fellow paragliders. Each of them is carrying a huge rucksack, making them look like giant tortoises.

Laurent is friendly and reassuring. As he unfurls his wing, he explains how the flight will go.

We’ll be doing the so-called “highest” flight, 25 minutes in the sky, with a planned landing at La Petite Rosière. The paragliding equipment used for tandem flights is subject to strict standards. The wings have a surface area of between 37 and 44 m² and can carry a total flying weight of between 130 and 230 kg. This makes it possible to carry passengers of any build. Laurent puts the harness on my back: it’s a harness designed for sitting comfortably and, above all, safely.

I strap on my snowboard and that’s it: I’m in front of the take-off runway. The paraglider’s instructions are clear: you have to descend straight down the slope and above all avoid turning. We’re both ready. Suddenly, it’s time to take off: we’re hurtling straight down the slope. I don’t even have time to feel scared: our feet take off very quickly.

Paragliding over the 3 Vallées ⛰️

Suddenly, the wind is in command. Everything becomes magical. It’s an indescribable emotion. I feel a sense of fulfilment and well-being. But at the same time totally safe, as if nothing can touch me. Although Laurent is right behind me, I have the impression of being alone, facing the majestic peaks of the valley, lulled by the sound of the sail.

Laurent points out the mountains of the 3 Vallées and the Vanoise National Park that surround us: Cime de Caron, Dent Parrachée, Pointe de la Masse… I’m speechless at the splendour of the snow-covered panorama.

He suggested I take the controls of the paraglider. Steering allows me to feel the wind in the wing, to understand the centrifugal force and to grasp the subtleties of manoeuvres during turns.

Laurent then took over the controls and suggested I discover some aerobatics. I accepted without hesitation, and this bubble of weightlessness took on a touch of madness. Although I can’t work out what tricks he’s doing, I get a huge rush of adrenaline. It’s a dizzying dance, a unique symbiosis between extreme sensations and the beauty of the sky.

When it stops, I have a strange feeling: my head is spinning and at the same time I have an irrepressible desire to start again.

We fly on for a while. Time to enjoy one last time the breathtaking scenery of Méribel, swirling between mountains, forests and rivers.

A landing at La Petite Rosière

It's time to put our feet back on the ground. To be honest, I'm apprehensive about landing on my snowboard. The instructor asked me to put my snowboard as straight as possible.

In the end, everything went fine, I instinctively got into position and we landed very gently.

I came back down to earth with my eyes full of stars. Paragliding is a memorable experience: it’s a unique combination of intense excitement and, at the same time, astonishing serenity. Above all, it’s an extraordinary way to discover the beauty of the Savoie countryside. I’m extremely grateful to Tandem Top for giving me the opportunity to discover this sport, and I sincerely recommend this fabulous experience to everyone.

Paragliding in summer🌞

Interview with Laurent from Tandem Top:

Why try paragliding?

It’s magical to be able to travel so far with a piece of fabric and some string! Honestly, it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever done and it’s changed my life. I’ve always dreamed of flying, and when I discovered that you could fly miles above the sky with a paraglider, I made it my job. What’s more, it’s an environmentally-friendly activity.!

Can you describe the experience for us?

Free flight means discovering the true beauty of the planet by working with the elements. You fly over mountains, you can travel for a whole day and admire nature’s beauty for hours on end. You can come across eagles, birds of prey, crows… The earth is even more beautiful from up there!

Who can go paragliding?

Paragliding is accessible to everyone, from children to adults, as long as you can ski a green run in the resort. Snowboarders need a more experienced level, as the slopes can be intimidating.

Why fly in Méribel?

I wouldn’t do it anywhere else. Méribel has exceptional sunshine compared with other resorts, and its aerological atmosphere is particularly interesting. The landscape is breathtaking, with beautiful buildings, forests and exceptional sites such as the Vanoise Natural Park. Plus, there’s a whole tribe of hinds and roe deer here, which is just wonderful!

Théâtre improvisation Carole _ Compagnie des Alpes

March 13, 2025: Improvisation Theatre with Carole

Carole is about to leave her parents and her native mountain to pursue her dream of becoming an actress in Paris. Through the story of her three characters, this play explores themes close to our hearts: family relationships, rural life, unspoken words, and secrets…

All of this is handled with subtlety, humor, and whimsy. A tribute to ordinary people, who are, nonetheless, so unique.

Voyage au bout de l'amour par la Comédie des Alpes à Méribel

March 20, 2025 : a journey to the end of love

Discover the latest original creation by Thomas Caruso Aragona.

A play that is as funny as it is modern, performed by four actors who, in a true theatrical feat, bring 18 characters to life to tell interwoven stories.

It’s the story of a man who writes a play for his wife, so she’ll never forget how much he loves her. Or perhaps, it’s the opposite.
It’s the tale of a boundless love that defies time and life itself, a journey to the very end of everything.
It’s also the story of a dreamy, poetic boy, hopelessly in love with a girl whose name is that of a flower.

A performance that dares to answer a question few would dare ask: What if love were, in the end, the last link that truly connects us to life?

So… Let the show begin!

Inspiring encounter with the artist Sandrine Orisio

To mark the occasion, we met Méribel-born Sandrine Orisio, a mountain dweller at heart and a painter for over 20 years. She passionately shares her artistic journey and the profound influence of the environment on her art. It’s a story that transcends her canvases, revealing the very evolution of her identity over the years.

Memories of a mountain childhood

A sunny, cheerful personality, Sandrine stands facing the majestic summit of La Saulire, revealing the profound influence of her childhood in the mountains on her artistic work.

Sandrine: I’ve been a painter for over 20 years. I didn’t study specifically to become a painter, but I’ve never given up despite the hazards inherent in the profession. It’s more a question of taste and life circumstances. An unwavering desire that has developed over time.

How would you describe your connection with the mountains?

Sandrine: I grew up in the mountains, in Méribel. The valley is very important to me. It’s a family haven, with a history, traditions and values that are close to my heart. The mountains aren’t just about skiing, they’re about nature, the birds that fly over the peaks… There’s something about freedom. We’re kings of the world when we’re on top of the mountain!

And Méribel?

Sandrine: Welcome, warmth and nature. A warm and friendly atmosphere with its architecture and family image. There’s also the skiing and the mountain setting: exceptional sites here like the Tueda nature reserve, hiking in the Vanoise park between lakes, glaciers and mountain pastures.

When nature inspires art :

Ever since she was a child, Sandrine Orisio has been fascinated by mountain flowers, animals found in the forest and other wonders that surround us. Representing the environment, which is at the heart of her art, is an expressive way of conveying messages that are both ecological and humanist.

How does nature influence your artistic expression?

Sandrine : I paint trees, animals… to show that this is what is important. The things that surround us are my testimony. In my paintings, I work a lot on all the elements of nature which, in my opinion, have retained a pure aspect. On the other hand, I don’t paint people. I depict man as a stick figure because I feel that our understanding of the earth has not evolved. We are both creators and destroyers of what surrounds us.

Ecology is clearly important to you, it’s a message you want to convey in your work. But are there others?

Sandrine : Yes, humanist messages. Paying attention to the environment and loving everything around us, without making distinctions. And most importantly, we mustn’t forget where we come from. Comfort and modernity run the risk of making us lose our deepest essence, which is Mother Earth. It may sound a little naive to talk about it like that, but for me it’s the crux, the core of all life.

Travelling as a source of inspiration :

The artist has also travelled extensively. Each of her expeditions has helped to shape her personal development, as well as that of her art.

You have mentioned some of the things that inspire you: nature, your inner balance, your travels… what other sources of inspiration are reflected in your art?

Sandrine : I’ve travelled a lot in my life, and I’m also a sort of shaman. I have my outer journeys, to the other side of the planet, and my inner journeys that nourish my painting through colours that are rich in visions. Everything is possible! I can create without logic, mixing styles without any barriers. I give myself total freedom. Above all, each colour has a vibration. They nourish the creator and the viewer, who will feel an emotion. For me that’s the whole point of painting: to make people feel something.

What journeys have left a lasting impression on you??

Sandrine : The first major trip I made was to China, and for a long time it was a source of inspiration in the overall vision of my life as an artist. Then there was a recurring trip to Patagonia in Argentina. Over there, I learnt to look more closely, because there is very little vegetation due to the semi-arid climate. So as soon as there’s a plant or a tree, it takes on greater proportions. This has led me to explore our surroundings in greater depth. More recently, Mexico!  That’s where I found my colours: red, yellow…

Find ones own mountain

Sandrine Orisio is thrilled and very proud to be presenting her work in the town where she grew up. In addition to the exhibition, Sandrine Orisio will be running workshops designed to introduce visitors to the work of Samivel, a mountain painter.

Sandrine : Adults and children alike will be inspired by the artist to “create their own mountain”. This means that people, with their own unique sensibilities, make the place their own, expressing what the mountains mean to them?

Do you have a story to tell us about this project?

Sandrine : At my first exhibition at the Méribel Tourist Office, I presented my first paintings, including a particularly dark and morbid one depicting a monstrous woman with two heads. A woman, moved to tears when she saw it, sat down in front of it. When I told her I was the artist, she hugged me and cried, asking me what had possessed me to create such a work. I explained that it was a way for me to express the darker side of myself that I wanted to get out. She confided in me that she had been through horrible experiences, and it was then that I realised the powerful impact my paintings could have on people’s emotions, both positive and sad. This episode left an indelible mark on my artistic perception.

Has this experience led you to paint more positive, colourful things?

Sandrine : No, it’s the fact that the older I get, the happier and more colourful I become. Often the creator paints who he is. The palette is the artist. It’s all me. You can see the difference as my paintings evolve. Today, I’m very happy to be able to present my artistic evolution. I’ve come full circle!

Any last thoughts to share with us?

Sandrine : As it’s a place that’s going to start holding exhibitions again, I hope there’ll be more! Not necessarily with me, but the fact that the Méribel Tourist Office is continuing to reach out to artists is a plus for the resort. For which, I’d like to thank the Tourist Office, it’s amazing. It has really touched me and I’m very grateful.

Explore Sandrine’s artistic world further by taking part in “Sandrine’s Workshops” from Monday to Friday, 3.30pm to 6.30pm, in the auditorium hall.
